Lettuce Create: How Canva Got Sucessful 👩‍🎨

🥬 How she got this idea?

In sunny Australia, Melanie Perkins, a young university student, found herself grappling with the complexities of graphic design software - Microsoft and Adobe.

She knew there had to be a better way.

Frustrated by the steep learning curve, she envisioned a tool that would make design accessible to everyone, just like tossing together a fresh salad.

So, armed with determination and a sprinkle of creativity, she shared her idea with her friend-turned-husband, Cliff Obrecht. Together, they embarked on an exciting journey to bring Melanie's vision to life.

🥬 How did it start?

Melanie Perkins and Cliff Obrecht founded Fusion Books in 2007, a platform that revolutionized yearbook design.

Fusion Books allowed students to create their own school yearbooks with a simple drag-and-drop tool and design templates.

Inspired by her mother, who oversaw the school yearbook, Melanie wanted to simplify the design process. Fusion Books quickly became the largest yearbook publisher in Australia and expanded to France and New Zealand.

This success laid the foundation for Melanie's future triumph with Canva, the graphic design powerhouse that continues to inspire millions worldwide.

Fusion Books was the stepping stone that paved the way for Melanie's vision to simplify design with Canva.

🥬 What struggles did she face?

Back in the day, when Fusion Books was soaring high, Cliff and Melanie hit a little roadblock. They were strapped for cash and desperately needed investors to fuel their dreams.

But alas, no one seemed to believe in their grand vision. Undeterred, they changed the game and rebranded as Canva Inc.

However, the investors were still playing hard to get. But fate had a surprise in store for them!

They crossed paths with the legendary investor Bill Tai, who didn't give them the investment they sought, but invited them to epic kite-surfing events.

A few of these events took place in Silicon Valley, where Melanie and Obrecht explored every possible avenue but were still unable to receive assistance.

🥬 What was the turning point?

Melanie and Obrecht, the founders of Canva, had a serendipitous encounter with Lars Rasmussen, the co-founder of Google Maps, at a Silicon Valley event.

They were thrilled to share their vision with him, and Rasmussen showed genuine interest. However, he advised them to wait until they had the right tech team in place.

Determined to make their dream a reality, Rasmussen became Canva's tech advisor and introduced them to Cameron Adams, a former Google employee with exceptional technical expertise. Adams initially had no plans to join Canva but was convinced by Melanie's persuasive email.

With Adams on board as Chief Product Officer, Canva officially launched in 2013. The response was overwhelming, with over 600,000 users joining within the first year.

Canva expanded its reach to cities like Beijing and Manila, constantly upgrading its platform with unique features.

Canva's valuation reached an impressive $6 billion after raising $60 million in funding. Melanie and Obrecht's journey exemplifies how visionary entrepreneurs can turn their dreams into billion-dollar realities.

🥬 Lessons we can take from Melanie’s Sucess Story

Melanie’s belief in making design available to everyone kept her motivated and moving forward. Every rejection brought her one step closer to the next client who might finally say “yes.”

As a result of her dedication, Canva is one of the few profitable unicorn startups. Nowadays, very few businesses uphold strong moral principles, but Melanie’s vision has made Canva one of them.

But her brilliant idea and excellent service demonstrated that there is always room for the best product. Her story demonstrates that if you have the best product and believe it will serve people, you should stand by it.

No matter how many times you are turned down or how formidable your rivals are, you can always win in the end.

As always, having a fantastic product, working hard, and being committed are crucial.
